Bringing the Hotness
New York City’s April heat wave rolled into the Mandarin Oriental Hotel on Thursday night, where New Yorkers for Children hosted its annual A Fool’s Fête. “Would it be weird if I asked someone to put some ice on my back?” model Hilary Rhoda wondered aloud. Weird or not, more than one tuxedo-clad young man would’ve been only too happy to oblige. Indeed, getting people away from the bars—and the ice cubes—was no easy feat. The lights flashed kindergarten-naptime-style before everyone finally sat down for dinner.
Once guests like Malin Akerman, Melissa George, and Emmy Rossum were in their seats, the real reason for the affair announced itself.
Shantel Schloss, one of New Yorkers for Children’s scholarship recipients, took the mic and spoke about how she’s benefited from the charity’s programs. “You all helped my dreams become a reality,” she said. “We’re going to have fun tonight, but I want to thank each and every one of you for your support.”
After that, it was on to the dance floor—and back to heat wave-induced antics. Rie Rasmussen was keen to offer her services to the organization. “Perhaps I could teach some of the girls in the program the art of seduction?” the model-turned-filmmaker asked. “No? Fine, I’ll go check out the silent auction.” The designer merch on the block combined with ticket sales ended up raising nearly half a million dollars for NYFC, which will funnel the funds into educational packs and computers for underprivileged foster children.
