Group Dynamics
When designer Elise Øverland decided she wanted to make a film that captured the spirit of her Resort collection, she recruited a crack team of girlfriends to help her get the job done. Director Poppy de Villeneuve, jewelry designer Pamela Love, and star Aimee Mullins trekked out to the New Mexico desert for the shoot, and a month later, Say Good Morning to the Night debuted at a down-to-earth affair at Øverland’s West Chelsea studio.
Salman Rushdie, Loree Rodkin, Rachel Feinstein Currin and John Currin, Tom Sachs, Yvonne Force Villareal, and Chiara Clemente—like we said, a down-to-earth affair—were among those who showed up to partake of barbecue and the view from Øverland’s balcony. “We shot it at Val Kilmer’s ranch,” Overland explained matter-of-factly as the film looped inside. “Val has been a friend of mine for years; he’s like a big brother. And when I was trying to think of a place to shoot, I kept coming back to his ranch—he’s got the desert, the mountains, horses, everything. He was incredibly generous. I called him, and he said, ‘Come on down, camp out.’ “
As laid-back as Øverland’s bash was, Corduroy magazine’s was over-the-top. Rumors—true, in fact—had been swirling around town all day that the party at Milk Gallery launching the Spring/Summer issue would be graced by unannounced performances by Yoko Ono and Patti Smith. (Scheduled performer Pete Doherty, meanwhile, was turned away at U.S. Customs and sent packing back to England.) Attendees such as Theodora Richards, Richard Chai, Phillip Lim, and Yigal Azrouël turned up to peruse the photographs commissioned by Corduroy fashion editor Liz McClean, which were to be auctioned off to benefit the micro-finance organization Kiva. Trouble is, pretty much everyone else in the tri-state area showed up, too. That meant even MisShapes Leigh Lezark, Geordon Nicol, and Greg Krelenstein got stuck outside in the crush, and they were supposed to be deejaying the event. Before long, the cops arrived, management shut down the building, and Patti and Yoko never materialized, after all.
