The Cannes Film Festival got an injection of la dolce vita over the weekend, as Gucci threw not one but two glamour-drenched parties. On Friday, the Italian label sponsored the premiere of the re-release of Visconti’s 1963 masterpiece Il Gattopardo, which was restored by Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation. The Leopard, as it’s known on our side of the Atlantic, is often referred to as Italy’s Gone With the Wind. “We are committed to the preservation and appreciation of great works like this,” Scorsese said after the screening. But would the Oscar-winning director venture to compare his own works to those which his society preserves? Not a chance.

On Saturday, Gucci sponsored Vanity Fair’s annual Cannes bash, which was packed from wall to wall—or, in the case of the Hôtel du Cap venue, from seaside cliffs to yacht-filled sea—with boldfaced names. Jennifer Lopez and Kate Beckinsale were representing for Hollywood, and Naomi Campbell and Margherita Missoni led the fashion camp. Even local royalty—i.e., Charlotte Casiraghi, who was in Monaco with her family for the Grand Prix—made an appearance. And believe us when we tell you, no box was left unchecked: handsome waiters, glasses never even half empty, not to mention a more-amusing-than-usual party favor (a Zippo lighter inscribed with an Elizabeth Taylor quote: “When the sun comes up, I have morals again”). Gucci’s Frida Giannini kept herself busy running around with a camera person, working the crowd for photo ops. Making a beeline from Tommy Hilfiger to Karolina Kurkova, she told us, “There are so many people I want to say hi to there.”
